Your first day at school or work is always pretty daunting and scary. Even more so when you haven’t been in a classroom in a long time. Today was my first day at WITT college for my Civil Engineering diploma.
I’m not getting into the engineering side just yet, as I have to pass Engineering Mathematics and Technical Literacy first, so its a big throwback 16 years, to when I was 16 (oh God am I really that old?) and basic trigonometry. I’m not doing too bad, maths is still maths, but there have been some major advancements with calculator technology and am already struggling!

I don’t sleep well the night before and am clock watching through milking as the cows are blissfully an aware that I have somewhere to be at 9am and move slower than ever. As if my first day nerves weren’t bad enough, there are 2 sets of road works I need to get through and time is ticking. I only just make it.
Thankfully the teacher banked on some first day confusion and didn’t really have a lesson planned, but we managed to recap the basics with a quiz and some games before offical first day activities.
At WITT we were welcomed on to campus and into the school Whanau (family) with a powhiri (welcome ceremony) and kai (food). It was a great opportunity to meet fellow students, thankfully I’m not the oldest or only girl, and our tutors who all seem friendly.
I’m looking forward to getting stuck into study again and have an academic challenge, once I’ve figured this calculator out!
